Which Sportsbook is for You?

What is your favorite sport to bet on? Football? Basketball? Darts? Regardless of what sport you are interested in and want to bet on, you can rest assured that there are sportsbooks for that sport. But there seems to be so many online sites where you can place your bet, that you are almost paralyzed with indecision. How do you know which sportsbook is for you and how do you know that you can trust it?

One of the best ways is to read sportsbook reviews. These reviews are readily available online. Make sure that you are reading reviews from reputable people. Some places pay for reviews. You know that if someone pays for a review that the review will be all positive and glowing and won’t give any negative comments. So, avoid any reviews that have been paid for by the sportsbook.

You can find good reviews in forums. This is where people who are avid users go to share their experiences and where newbies can ask questions and get information. This can be a treasure trove of information for someone who is just learning the ropes of sportsbooks.

Another way to find good sportsbooks, is to pay close attention to their options and policies. If they seem to offer the world to you in bonuses, back off and stay away from them. Places that offer spectacularly good bonuses are generally unstable sportsbooks and should be avoided.

Check out how quickly you will receive your money. Some places take two to three months to send out payments. Avoid these places if at all possible.

You can tell a good sportsbook by the quality of their customer service. Do they offer it 24/7? Do they have a live online chat? Do they have a telephone number where you can call someone and talk to them in person? You want to make sure that you can easily get answers to your questions.

Getting Started in Online Gambling

Online gambling is still a young and fairly untested industry. It isn’t yet clear which are the good and the bad casinos, so it is important to choose your casino carefully.

Gambling online offers two options, Java and software that is downloaded. While Java allows almost immediate play, downloadable software has better graphics and sound. Once you’ve installed the software or are accessing it online, you need to open an account with the casino and put money in it. While most people use a debit or credit card to do this, you can also use Western Union or a bank wire transfer, but these are often costly arrangements. It is important to note whether your credit card company views these transactions as cash advances which can also be costly.

Before you begin to play, double check the casino’s gaming rules: some follow European rules over US ones. It is also a good idea to document everything you do. When you are done playing, you can cash out or just leave your money with the casino. If you cash out and have a net gain, you original funds will be credited back to your credit or debit card while your winnings will probably be sent to you by check. Many casinos will deduct a finance charge.

Because the industry is still news, online casinos are working hard to get your business. Some will give new customers up to 50 percent of their initial deposit and even randomly deposit money in customer accounts. Some online casinos will give away vacations based on how much money you bet. The rules are often better than mortar and brick casinos and you don’t have to leave your home.

The downside of gambling online is that you have to wait until you actually get back your money after cashing out. Money reappearing on your credit card can take up to four weeks although using debit cards is much faster. Customer service can be hit-or-miss, unlike physical casinos. While some have great service, others take a while to respond to email and you can’t find their telephone number.

The Texas Hold ‘Em Craze

It seems that no matter where you go in America you are greeted with hundreds of Texas Hold’empoker games. There are handheld poker games, just for fun poker games and even poker games that players can play for real money. What is the history of poker and Texas Hold’em, what explains this incredible surge in popularity and what are some of the effects of the new popularity of poker?

Poker has a long history that dates back centuries. People have always gambled and bet on various games of chance, from dice games, shooting games to different card games. Poker became extremely popular in the days of settlers. People would often bond together over poker in games that spread as America developed from east to west.

On the Texas Hold’em aspect very little is really known about how and where the game was invented. Most poker experts credit a small town in Texas, known as Robstown, with coming up with the game in the early 1900s. Texas Hold’em officially found its way to Las Vegas in 1967 and didn’t really take off until 1980s with the World Series of Poker. However, it wasn’t until the early 2000s that Texas Hold ‘em really took off and started the nationwide craze that is so popular now.

Texas Hold’Em has really become popular mostly because of the hundreds of televised tournaments that are shown at all hours of the day. There are professional, amateur and even celebrity Hold’em tournaments. People watch these tournaments and instantly become fascinated with the concept and want to play on their own.

The Texas Hold ‘em craze has really sparked some great benefits for certain industries. Las Vegas tourism was starting to see a lack of visitors until the Hold ‘em craze came about. The craze also saw a spark in companies that started to manufacture and sell custom poker tables as everyone wanted to own a home version.

Counting Cards

Dustin Hoffman was the perfect card counter in the movie “Rainman.” Hoffman plays an idiot-savant with a knack for winning in casinos. Media often makes it seem card counting is illegal with people on television quickly becoming persona non grata when a casino catches on. However, card counting is legal despite its unpopularity in the world’s casinos. But because casinos are private property, owners do have the right to kick you out.

Blackjack became the first card game publicly identified as one in which counting cards could be used to beat it. Casinos began seeing their profits drop and put in place measures to prevent it such as using multiple decks and shuffling often.

There are a number of ways to count cards, one of the easiest being a system called Hi-Lo. In this method, a player assigns a value to each card. Cards from two through five become +1; seven through nine are zero; tens, aces and face cards are -1. The player adds those values, the result being an indicator of the number of tens and aces left in the deck relative to smaller cards. If, after a hand, the total value is positive, the cards left in the deck run in your favor.

If there are multiple decks left in the shoe, a card counter need only divide his running count by the number of decks remaining. If you are playing a six-deck game and there are four decks remaining in the shoe, ending a hand with -4 becomes -1.

The card counter can use this information to know when to raise bets and when to lower them. With this edge the house advantage can turn into 1.5-percent odds in your favor.

Enjoy Gambling Without Adding Travel Costs

Have you ever wondered whether you could walk away from a casino with a pocketful of cash? If you have, you are not alone. Many people are curious about gambling but perhaps aren’t sure about spending the money it would take to visit one of the U.S. locations where gambling is legal. Fortunately, online gambling may be an alternative option for you.

Virtual casinos have the ability to offer online casino games to U.S. citizens. These games work exactly like the ones in a traditional casino. You can try your hand at poker, join a game of roulette, or place a wager on a black jack game. If you prefer playing the slots, online casinos have those, too!

The entire setup of a virtual casino mimics what you would actually experience if you walked into a traditional gambling establishment. You’ll hear the same sounds, see the same lights, and get to experience the same wins or loses that you would if you went to a traditional casino. Gaming websites are so successful at mimicking what gamblers experience in traditional casinos that many people will join an online casino so they can enjoy their favorite games between visits to their preferred gambling hot spots.

As an added advantage, an online casino may offer an incentive to attract new players. This can be a good way to double your original investment or try your hand at a casino game you never thought about playing. To get started, set up an account with an online casino and transfer money to it. Then, use the funds available to play the virtual games. The online casino will track your wins and losses and debit or credit your account, as needed. If you win, you can request a payout from the casino, subject to the casino’s payout guidelines.

With online casinos, you can enjoy your favorite casino games without ever leaving home!

New Jersey Voters Favor Sports Betting

Not surprisingly, most New Jersey voters think sports betting should be legalized nationwide, according to a Fairleigh Dickinson University survey released in February 2011. At the same time people in New Jersey are against Internet gambling.

More than half of polled New Jersey residents are in favor of getting rid of the federal ban on sports betting and more than 60 percent would like to see sport betting in the casinos in Atlantic City and at horse-racing tracks.

A majority of New Jersey voters (67 percent) aren’t ready for Internet gambling. According to the poll director, people think the Internet as a barrier to participation is too low, much like having a liquor store next door.

On the ballot in November 2011, New Jersey voters will be asked whether or not they want to amend the state constitution and permit sports betting. Even if approved, there is still a federal ban on sports betting in most states which would need to be repealed before New Jersey could get it.

Democratic state senator Raymond Lesniak filed a lawsuit arguing the ban on sports betting should be lifted because it is unconstitutional. According to Lesniak’s argument, it treats all the states where it is banned differently than the four where it is legal. Nevada, Delaware, Montana and Oregon all had legal sports betting before the federal ban was enacted in 1992.

A bill permitting Internet gambling in New Jersey is waiting for Governor Chris Christie’s signature to make it law. The deadline for the governor’s response is March 3rd, by which time the governor can sign it, veto it or all it take effect without a signature. With this legislation in effect, casinos in Atlantic City casino can make Internet gambling available, but only to New Jersey residents.

Signs You Have a Gambling Problem

“What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” isn’t necessarily true for a gambling addict. Gambling problems affect more than 15 million people in America, 20 percent of whose gambling problems are considered severe.

Problem gamblers, often known as addicts or pathological gamblers, frequently have problems with their relationships and responsibilities at home and work. These issues can lead to financial catastrophe and even doing things the gambler didn’t think possible such as stealing.

Gambling addiction is often thought of as a hidden illness because there are no obvious signs of a problem. Gamblers will frequently deny there is a problem and cover up their addiction. So, how do you know if someone you know or you yourself have a gambling problem?

Signs of a Gambling Problem

You or someone you know is secretive about gambling. If you lie about how much you gamble thinking others won’t understand or that you will surprise them when you win big.

You have trouble controlling your gambling. You feel compelled to keep gambling until you’ve spent all your money or you keep raising your bets trying to win back lost money.

You gamble when you don’t have the money. You gamble until you run out of money and move on to using money set aside to pay bills or buy things for your kids.

Your family and friends are concerned about you. If people are worried about you, take a good look at how gambling is impacting your life.

Getting Help

Gambling is an impulse-control disorder. Compulsive gamblers can’t stop themselves from gambling, even when they know they are hurting someone. People with gambling addictions need to get help. It’s important they understand that getting help isn’t a sign of weakness, it is actually a sign of strength.
